We are looking for a mixed veterinary surgeon to join our friendly and supportive team at DSMCG – an independent, genuinely mixed practice (almost 50:50 SA:LA) covering Caithness and parts of Sutherland.
The role is full or part-time. We require someone with an enthusiasm for mixed practice although particular interests can be pursued. Caithness has a strong agricultural community, which is mainly beef and sheep with a small amount of dairy. You will be based mainly at our Wick branch but occasionally required to help out at our other branch in Thurso. A typical day starts with a cup of tea and team meeting at 8:45am and when not on call you will normally be finished by 5:30pm. The shared out of hours rota is currently 1:4 with days off in lieu, which normally works out as a day off after your midweek night on call. OOH is generally not too onerous but is busier during lambing and calving periods in the spring and early summer. New graduates can expect to be well supported by senior vets.
Our practices are well equipped with in-house blood machines, digital x-ray (including portable for equine), dental x-ray, SA/LA ultrasound scanners, equine power float, hydraulic tipping crate and tup/bull fertility testing kits. We carry out a range of orthopaedic procedures including TPLOs. At Wick, there are 2-3 RVNs working on a daily basis.
Even though the pace of life is more laid back in the north of Scotland there is still plenty to enjoy in your free time. There are numerous sporting clubs, fitness facilities and outdoor activities available in the area. For the more relaxed among us there are beautiful beaches to walk the dog on, the northern lights, a variety of wildlife, as well as excellent cafes/restaurants and a cinema.
We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience. 29 days holiday each year. CPD encouraged and usual subscriptions paid. Accommodation and vehicle can be provided. You are more than welcome to discuss the role with one of our more recently qualified assistants or previous employees.
Phone – 01955 602088 and ask to speak to Pete or Iain Maclean.
