Background:

The School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham is the first brand new, purpose-built veterinary school in the UK for over 50 years and it is our intention to make significant leading contributions to both veterinary research and teaching within the context of clinical relevance and application to the wider veterinary profession.

The School has a number of Clinical Associates to ensure that undergraduate and postgraduate students gain the most appropriate and varied educational experience possible. The farm experience is predominantly provided through the Scarsdale Veterinary Group, which covers a wide area of the Midlands and offers traditional 24 hour emergency cover in addition to a system of regular routine preventative health visits for the majority of their dairy clients as well as beef herd and sheep flock health plans. 

Project description:

This internship position is available for a recent graduate with an interest in an accelerated learning position to build up their clinical skills over 12 months as part of a busy yet supportive, pro-active farm animal team.

The successful candidate would be predominantly based at Scarsdale Veterinary Group, an 8 vet farm animal team with a busy and varied case-load, where they would work alongside the present team to assist in all aspects of daily farm work. They would also undertake formal study time and be provided with an opportunity to work alongside the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science’s specialist clinicians in clinical practice. The position will include formal training leading to a PG Certificate in Veterinary Medicine, fully funded by Scarsdale Veterinary Group.

Starting in August 2012 the internship offers, a tax-free stipend of £16,000, 5 days CPD with CPD allowance, fully supervised out of hours duties, a modular training program and dedicated clinical and academic mentors to ensure you achieve your potential practically whilst developing a comprehensive clinical portfolio.

MEDICINE NURSE

You will assist our Internal Medicine clinicians with the management of
referred cases, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and
supervision of hospitalised and intensive patients. You should have experience of working in a referral environment and ideally hold the DipAVN (Medical). 

THEATRE NURSE

You will be based in our theatre suite, working with clinicians from our
Ophthalmology, Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic referral services as well as our first opinion vets. Experience of working in a referral environment is essential and a DipAVN (Surgical) would be an advantage.

HOSPITAL NURSE

You will be based in the busy Prep Room, working with our Anaesthetist and clinicians from all our referral services and our first opinion team. You will also spend time in our imaging suite, using ultrasound, digital radiography,
fluoroscopy, CT and MRI. Experience of working in a referral environment is essential and a DipAVN would be an advantage.

NIGHT NURSE

You will work alongside our dedicated Night Vets to provide a high level of care for our referral and first opinion in-patients and emergency cases. You will have strong support from our day staff and will work alongside them with our 1 in 3 rota (7 days of night work, 7 days off, 5 days of day work).

Experience of emergency and night work is essential, experience of intensive care and a DipAVN would be an advantage.
